Sell a Flood-Damaged Car

You can request an as-is offer for a flood-damaged car, but disclose the water exposure before the buyer assesses it. Explain what happened, what has been inspected, the vehicle's title and insurance status, and where it can be collected. Drying the interior or getting the engine to start does not establish that all damage has been resolved.

Start with a safe assessment

NHTSA advises a thorough assessment before starting a flooded vehicle because some damage may not be visible. Arrange qualified assistance rather than trying to demonstrate that it runs for a buyer. See NHTSA's flood-damaged vehicle guidance.

For an electric or hybrid vehicle with suspected battery damage, contact the dealer or emergency services as appropriate. NHTSA warns of shock and fire hazards and says a damaged lithium-ion vehicle should not be parked in a garage or within 50 feet of structures, vehicles or combustibles. Have qualified responders handle a hazardous situation; do not attempt to move or work on a damaged battery yourself. See NHTSA's electric and hybrid vehicle safety guidance.

Information to give a flood-damaged car buyer

  • Exposure: When the flooding occurred, the water level you observed and the type of water, if known. Do not guess about details you did not see.

  • Current condition: Visible water intrusion, interior damage and any inspection findings.

  • Attempts to start or repair: Explain what has been done since the flood and provide written findings if available.

  • Vehicle details: Year, make, model, mileage and whether it is gasoline, diesel, hybrid or electric.

  • Paperwork: Title status, insurance claim position, liens and your authority to sell.

  • Location: Whether it is at home, a shop or a storage yard, with access and loading limitations.

Check insurance and ownership before arranging a sale

If a claim is open, ask the insurer whether it needs to inspect the vehicle and whether it will acquire ownership or you will retain it. Confirm that position before agreeing to a separate buyer's pickup. Do not assume a vehicle remaining on your property means the sale paperwork is ready.

Ask the relevant state motor vehicle agency about any salvage, nonrepairable or other title requirements that apply. Our title and ownership-document guide explains why missing paperwork and owner-retained insurance vehicles require separate checks.

What affects an offer for a flooded car?

The buyer considers the vehicle details, disclosed exposure, assessed damage, remaining components, title situation and collection location. A clean-looking interior is not enough to assess the full condition. Share what is known and leave unknowns clearly identified.

There is no fixed flood-damage deduction that applies to every car. Request a quote for the current vehicle and compare it with any repair option using written estimates. Our junk car value guide explains why running-car estimates and whole-vehicle purchase offers differ.

Plan collection with the buyer

Disclose flood exposure to the pickup operator as well as the person providing the quote. Confirm whether the vehicle rolls and steers, where it is stored and whether special handling is required. If it is at a shop or yard, resolve access permission, release arrangements and responsibility for outstanding charges before dispatch.

Agree on the payment amount, towing terms, required documents and any conditions that could change the quote. Keep those terms with your sale records.

Common flood-car selling questions

Can I sell it if the engine still starts?

You can request an assessment, but disclose the flood exposure and inspection findings. Starting does not establish that the vehicle is safe or free from hidden damage.

Should I clean it before getting an offer?

An accurate condition description matters more than presenting the vehicle as unaffected. Do not conceal water exposure or remove information a buyer or insurer needs to assess it. Ask about safe access before retrieving belongings.

Can I get an offer before the insurance claim is settled?

You can ask about options, but resolve ownership and any insurer inspection requirements before accepting a transfer or collection. Keep the insurer and prospective buyer informed.
