A salvage title changes the information a buyer needs, but it does not tell the full story of the vehicle. The car may have collision damage, another loss history, unfinished repairs or reusable components. When requesting an offer, give the exact wording on the ownership document and describe the physical condition separately.

Check whether you hold a salvage certificate, a rebuilt title, a junk or nonrepairable document, or another state-specific classification. These terms should not be treated as interchangeable. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System explains that title brands are labels assigned by state agencies. Confirm what your document permits with the issuing agency and the receiving buyer, especially for an interstate transaction.
A car can start and move while still lacking the approvals or documentation required for road use. Do not market a salvage certificate as equivalent to an ordinary road-use title. For example, New York requires its salvage examination process before a covered rebuilt salvage vehicle can receive the relevant title or registration. Other states use their own procedures; the New York example is not a national checklist.
Ask each prospective buyer whether it accepts the exact classification you hold and whether any additional ownership evidence is needed. A specialist repair buyer, dismantler and whole-car purchasing service may assess different future uses. Compare the offered amount, collection terms and document requirements together. A high quote is not useful if the buyer cannot complete the transfer.
Provide the known damage history and available repair records. Identify replaced, missing or untested components and whether the vehicle currently rolls, steers, starts or drives. If a shop has partially dismantled it, confirm which parts are included. Do not represent an unfinished repair as a completed rebuild or assume a title label explains every defect.
If an insurer took ownership under a settlement, you cannot independently sell the same vehicle as though it remained yours. If you retained it, confirm the required documents and any lender interest. Check the seller name, VIN and assignment sections before signing. Ask the buyer and motor vehicle agency how to correct an error rather than altering the document yourself.
Request an offer for its existing condition and documents first. Some transactions involve repairable or dismantling vehicles rather than a road-ready car. Eligibility depends on the document and buyer; do not spend on a rebuild solely because you assume every sale requires a normal registration.
Not necessarily. A bid or sale result can involve different fees, transport, documents and vehicle condition. Compare a current seller offer for your own car rather than using an unrelated auction listing as a guaranteed payout.
